Template:EpisodeBox2 A Shadow From The Past is the tutorial episode of Sly 2: Band of Thieves. While attempting to steal the Clockwerk parts from the Cairo museum, the gang discovers that the infamous Klaww Gang had already stolen the parts and have framed the Cooper Gang. At the end of the level, Sly and the gang flee from Inspector Fox, who believes that they stole the parts. Constable Neyla is seen for the first time, distracting Carmelita so Sly can make his escape.

Mission

Level Ending

The Cooper van makes a getaway from the authority vehicles. Carmelita tries to shoot the van with her shock pistol but fails. As Carmelita yells at Sly as the van gets away, Sly notes Carmelita is just as angry as ever and that she is quite lovely when she is angry. Sly starts having a few questions about Constable Neyla such as her mentioning of the Klaww Gang. He wonders if that was just a slip of the tongue or an intentional clue. Either way, it's the Cooper Gang's only lead on the missing Clockwerk parts. Sly then explains everything about Clockwerk, his deep hatred for the Cooper Clan's thieving reputation and how he mechanized himself to keep him immortal until the Cooper Clan was fully eliminated once and for all. He caught up with Sly's parents and killed them both, leaving Sly at an orphanage. It was there that he met Bentley and Murray, his two best friends and all the family he needed. Two years ago, Sly explains that he thought he had finished it, but he was naive to think he could easily wipe out that much hatred. Clockwerk is now back in pieces, but the threat is real. Sly wonders if the Klaww Gang realize what they have stolen. Sly admits he doesn't know what's in his future, but he will not let it be a repeat of his past.

Quotes

(Binocucom Chat)

  • Bentley: Breaker Alpha Foxtrot this is the "wizard", do you read me "sitting duck"?
  • Sly: This is "Peking Duck", I hear you "Blizzard".
  • Bentley: No Sly, I'm "the Wizard" and you're "sitting Duck".
  • Sly: I read you loud and clear Lizard.
  • Bentley: No I'm...forget it, you're not taking this seriously.
  • Sly: Yeah, I'm not. Look Bentley I know this is your first time out in the field but you've got to loosen up. If we're going to get to those Clockwerk Parts I need you on your toes. So in plain talk what's your status?
  • Bentley: Well, I've established myself in the basement and I'm pretty sure I can rewire the service if you can power it up from that security station.
  • Sly: Hang tough pal, it might take some time, but I'll figure out a way to get up there.

(after opening the security gate)

  • Bentley: Presto, all clear.
  • Sly: Thanks pal, for your first time out you did pretty well.
  • Bentley: Oh, this operation is far from complete. Now that the lasers and spotlights are offline, Murray should be moving into position for your rendezvous. I'll stay here and provide computer support while you go on ahead.

{upon finding the stolen Clockwerk parts}

  • Bentley: I don't get it Sly, the Clockwerk parts should be here. This is all wrong, we need to pull the plug on this operation right now!
  • Carmelita: {comes out of coffin} Freeze, Cooper!
  • Sly: Inspector Fox, as beautiful and unpredictable as ever.
  • Carmelita: Whereas you crooks are so predictable. You always return to the scene of the crime.
  • Sly: Crime? I haven't stolen anything...yet.
  • Carmelita: Oh really, then who broke in last night, and made off with all the Clockwerk parts? You got the motive.
  • Sly: Someone already stole that parts?
  • Carmelita: Don't play dumb with me.
  • Neyla: It might not have been him Carmelita. The method of entry and guard casualties all point to this being Klaww Gang job.
  • Sly: The Klaww Gang?
  • Carmelita: Constable Neyla, I allowed you to sit in on this stakeout as a favor to the Contessa. I really don't need any help.
  • Neyla: I think you might. Look at the facts?
  • Carmelita: Facts? Sly Cooper is right here, I caught him red-handed.
  • Neyla: I'm just saying there are more criminals in the world other than-
  • Carmelita: Sly Cooper, after him!
  • {While Sly is being chased by Carmelita in the hall, Murray catches up to Sly}
  • Murray: Wait up, Sly!
  • Sly: Shake a leg Murray, it's time to go!
  • {later Bentley comes}
  • Bentley: This wasn't part of the plan!
  • Sly: Yeah well, this is where things get fun.
  • {as the chase comes to an end}
  • Sly: This is getting a little hot, you guys go warm up the van I'll keep Carmelita busy!
  • Carmelita: You're all going to jail.
  • Sly: Pick me up at the rendezvous!

{Sly narrating animated cutscene)

  • Sly: Carmelita's just as angry as ever. She's really quite lovely when she's angry. That Constable Neyla...Was her reference to the Klaww Gang just a slip of the tongue, or an intentional clue? Either way, it's our only lead to the missing Clockwerk parts. Clockwerk; He was consumed with jealousy for the Cooper clan's thieving reputation. Is it inappropriate to refer to him as a monster? No, not at all. What kind of person lives for hundreds of years with the sole intention of wiping out a rival's family line? Imagine the hatred feeding that first decision to replace his mortal body with soulless machinery. Ultimately, it did the trick. Clockwerk lived on. He caught up with my parents, and I wound up in an orphanage. It was there I met my pals: Bentley, the brains of our outfit, and Murray, the brawn. They were all the family I needed. Two years ago, I thought I finished it. How naive to think I could easily put an end to that kind of hatred. And now, he's back. In pieces, sure, but the threat is real. Does the Klaww Gang even realize what they've stolen? I don't know what's in my future, but I won't let it be a repeat of my past
