Biography
Early life
Sly was born into the lineage of the Cooper Clan under the tutelage of his father. Between his father and the original Cooper Gang pulling off jobs, Sly would spend time with his father's friend, Jim McSweeney. At the age of three, Sly was taken by his father to a museum on the Ligurian coast in Italy where they met up with McSweeney, who then took the map to the Cooper Vault and hid it in the museum.

  +
He was voiced by Kevin Miller in all of his video game appearances.
Sly's parents bought a farm and this was where Sly grew up and learned about his family's history as master thieves. He was to follow in his family's footsteps and inherit their legacy, the Thievius Raccoonus, at the age of 8. On the night Sly was to inherit the book, a mysterious gang of criminals known as the Fiendish Five infiltrated the Cooper Farm. Try as he might, his father failed to defend himself, his wife, and his son from the gang. In the end, both of Sly's parents were murdered. The Fiendish Five ransacked the house in search of the book as Sly helplessly watched while hiding inside of a closet. After they found it, they tore out its pages and split it among themselves before leaving. Sly, without parents, ended up in an orphanage where he met his lifelong friends, Bentley and Murray. Sly was determined to grow up as an accomplished thief and live up to his namesake.

Early childhood
As children, the trio planned to steal the orphanage's cookie jar from Ms. Puffin, the Director of the orphanage, who would keep the children's holiday cookies for herself. Seeing that Murray couldn't sleep nights because he wanted the them so badly, the three decided to do something about it and became the Cooper's 3. Bentley eventually had come up with the perfect plan. Sly hid in Ms. Puffin's trash can and waited until she left for the night. By Bentley's calculations, they only had 3 minutes and 42 seconds until Scary John the Janitor came in to clean her office up. Bentley, talking to Sly outside the office window via the Cupinator, a device made from two paper cups on a string, tells Sly to get in to position two. Sly then pushed Ms. Puffin's desk and then her lamp near the bookcase where the cookie jar was located. He tells Bentley that all the furniture is in place. Bentley, realizing that Sly doesn't have the cookie jar yet, tells him to abort the mission as they're out of time. Sly then quickly jumps on the desk then swings on the lamps cord to gain enough momentum to reach the jar. Reaching the jar, Sly hears Scary John at the door. Murray, hearing John's name, saves Sly by speeding away on his tricycle while Sly holds onto the Cupinator and gets pulled out of the window before he can get the jar. Murray then crashes the tricycle because of the lack of breaks. He apologizes for crashing the tricycle with Sly lamenting that they were lucky. Bentley asks Sly how they could be lucky, as the mission was a failure. Sly then takes his cap off and reveals that he stored all the cookies from the jar in his cap before Murray saved Sly from Scary John. The trio then began to eat the cookies. With the mission a success, the Cooper Gang was born.

Orphaned and with no money or a place to stay, Sly was placed in an orphanage, where he met his now lifelong friends Bentley and Murray. With their encouragement, Sly was determined to live up to his namesake as an accomplished thief.
  +
  +
As children, the trio planned to steal the orphanage's cookie jar from Mrs. Puffin, the director of the orphanage, who kept the children's holiday cookies for herself. This desire came from the fact that "she was so nasty" and that Murray would spend sleepless nights thinking about the cookies. They started to strategize and gave themselves a name; the Coopers 3.
  +
  +
After much plotting, Bentley had come up with the perfect plan: Sly would hide in Puffin's trash bin until after she had left for the night and would swipe the cookies then. According to his calculations, Bentley decided they had only five minutes between Puffin's departure and the janitor's arrival. Unfortunately, Sly had misinterpreted Bentley's instructions and was nearly caught by the janitor. Due to Murray's quick thinking, Sly was yanked through the window at the last second before the janitor entered the office. However, the mission was not a failure, as Sly had stashed the cookies in his hat at the last moment. After their first successful heist, the Cooper Gang was born.

Sly, just arriving in Paris for the first time, was jumping around the rooftops exploring the city. He then sneaked into the Paris Opera House. The Opera House was empty apart from three people, a rookie policewoman, Carmelita Montoya Fox, Inspector Barkley and Ms. Tuskinanny (an opera singer and owner of the Diva Diamond) talking. Sly overheard Barkley roaring at Carmelita, the Inspector, nearing retirement and wanting to know that he was making the right choice in promoting her to his position, thought she wasn't up to the job of protecting the Diva Diamond and securing the Opera House. Sly enamored by the fox devised a plan to meet her. He went to the roof of the opera house and took out a map of Paris to see the lay of the land. Carmelita, ventured to the roof to find Sly overlooking the city. She called for some guards and they apprehended him, just as he had planned. They then tied and locked Sly in the janitor's closet. Fortunately, the janitor opened it, giving Sly enough time to cut himself free and escape to the Opera House's ventilation system. He then spied Barkley yelling at Carmelita because of Sly's escape, Carmelita then stormed off angrily. Realizing the trouble he got Carmelita in, Sly tried to help get her back in Barkley's good books. Backstage while Carmelita was looking for traces of Sly, Sly spotted Pierre, the stage manager, stealing the Diva Diamond amid the chaos. Sly knocked Pierre out and took the diamond, he then tied Pierre up, put a paper bag over his head and suspended him above the opera stage. Carmelita, Inspector Barkley and Ms. Tuskinanny then went on the opera's stage. Realizing the diamond was stolen, Tuskinanny began wailing while Barkley started shouting at Carmelita, reducing her to tears. Sly then cut the rope suspending Pierre, and dropped him in front of the three. Carmelita removed the mask to find Pierre with the Diva Diamond around his neck. She looked inside the bag to find Sly's calling card. Watching from the seats at the back of the opera house, Sly saw a real hero in Carmelita, who was then promoted to Inspector for protecting the Diva Diamond and arresting Pierre. Sly and Carmelita would later meet each other numerous times in the future.

  +
Many years later, Sly (seemingly in his teenage years) arrived in Paris "looking for a little adventure" when he came across the Paris Opera House. He claimed to be there to "just soak in the architecture". However, as he was overlooking the city with a map in hand, he was suddenly swarmed by what he claimed were "24 french cops" attempting to arrest him. Apparently, they assumed Sly was there to steal the prized "Diva Diamond" from the Opera House. After easily dealing with them, Sly was then attacked by a then-rookie policewoman who had called the guards on him in the first place. She was a vixen by the name of Carmelita Fox. Smitten by her good looks and her skills, Sly let her subdue and capture him, in the hopes he would get to know her more. Carmelita then proceeded to tie him up and stuff him in the Opera House's janitor closet, though Sly was later able to escape thanks to the clueless janitor finding him there and untying him.
  +
  +
As Sly prepared to leave however, he noticed Carmelita being scolded by her mentor, James Barkley, for failing to keep Sly contained. Angry at Sly for making her look like a fool in front of Barkley, Carmelita stormed off in search of the raccoon. Feeling bad for her, Sly decided he should help her out. Later on, he spotted Pierre, a rival thief and the Opera House's stage manager attempting to escape with the Diva Diamond (the antique Carmelita was protecting in the first place). He knocked Pierre out and recovered the diamond. Although he could have chosen to take the diamond home with him, Sly chose the selfless route. He proceeded to badly beat Pierre up, tie him with a rope, put a paper bag over his head (with his famous calling card inside said bag), and tie the diamond around his neck.
  +
  +
He then proceeded to take the unconscious Pierre to above the opera's stage, where he then dropped him into the stage as Barkley was berating Carmelita again, as a sort of gift. Carmelita, assumed by Barkley to being the one who captured Pierre, was immediately promoted to the rank of "Inspector" as Sly watched everything unfold with a smile on his face. And so began one very strange relationship.
  +
  +
Sometime later, Sly stole an item known as the Fire Stone of India, which put Carmelita after him again. He planned to give it to Carmelita as a token of his feelings for her.

Police Headquarters

Ten years after the Fiendish Five stole the Thievius Raccoonus, Sly had garnered a reputation as a cunning thief and had entangled the interest of Carmelita Fox. Sly embarked on the quest to steal back his inheritance and avenge his father's death. In Paris at 4:20 AM, Sly broke into Police Headquarters in Paris and recovered a file in Carmelita's office. The file contained her collected data of Sly's background and history, as well as information on the members of the Fiendish Five and their locations. After attempting to slip out through the fire escape, Sly encounters Carmelita and reminisces on their last meeting in Bombay when he stole the The Fire Stone of India, and she replies by explaining the function of her new Shock Pistol. Sly quickly leaps down the fire escape and runs through the parking lot, leaping into the back of Murray's van before the gang drives off, Carmelita shouting "You can't escape me, raccoon!"

Tide of Terror
Episode 1: Tide of Terror

Sly then headed out to the Isle O' Wrath, off the coast of the Welsh Triangle. On the journey, he studied up on their first target, Sir Raleigh the Frog. Once they arrived, Sly traversed Raleigh's lair until he found a way into Raleigh's storm machine.

  +
Ten years after the Fiendish Five stole the Thievius Raccoonus, Sly had garnered a worldwide reputation as a cunning thief. He and the gang embarked on a quest to steal back his inheritance and avenge his parents' deaths. Starting in Paris, Sly stole a police file from Inspector Fox's office, which engaged her interests, though she was unsuccessful in apprehending Sly at the scene. The file contained all of Carmelita's data on Sly and his background, as well as the Fiendish Five. Ready to finally become a master thief like his ancestors, Sly and the gang began a pursuit that would ultimately change their lives.
Inside, Sly confronted Raleigh and explained his desire to take back his section of the Thievius Raccoonus. Enraged, Raleigh attacked Sly. Beaten, Raleigh ranted about how his defeat wouldn't save Sly from Muggshot, the local gangster of Mesa City, Utah. The pages that Raleigh had taken included details of Rioichi Cooper and his Ninja Spire Jump. With Carmelita in hot pursuit, Sly escaped with the Cooper Gang.

  +

Satisfied with the defeat of Raleigh, they prolonged their visit in England, Sly stealing Her Majesty's Big Bag of Crown Jewels, before returning to hideout, excited for their next heist.

  +
As the gang traveled around the world, they confronted each Fiendish Five member in their respective hideouts, defeating them one by one and collecting the pieces of the Thievius Raccoonus that they had taken. He used them to learn the techniques of his family.
Sunset Snake Eyes
Episode 2: Sunset Snake Eyes

Sly examined data on Muggshot shortly before arriving in Mesa City. He quickly infiltrated the "stronghold," and broke into Muggshot's Casino. Inspector Fox caught up to Sly, but was quickly lost among the rooftops.

  +
After the defeat of the Panda King, the gang headed to the Krakarov Volcano in Russia. Bentley had analyzed several unique vehicles that the other members of the Fiendish Five had at their bases of operation, the alloy of which could have only come from this volcano. On the journey, Sly examined the pages of the Thievius Raccoonus. Several of its pictures depicted a shadowy owl-like figure in the background. He compared these images to the little information that Carmelita's police file contained on the leader of the Fiendish Five, Clockwerk. He found that they matched his silhouette, leaving him to wonder if this was a simple coincidence or something more.
Muggshot, surprised that the one responsible for ruining his operation and killing his guards was Sly, drew his guns and attacked Sly. Using his wit, he destroyed all of Muggshot's weapons and defeated him; the gangster, taken aback by Sly's victory, commented on how he would need to defeat Mz. Ruby to retrieve the next part of the Thievius Raccoonus. Muggshot's pages talked of "Tennessee Kid" Cooper and his rail walk and rail slide move that he used to travel across the west. Sly evaded a second confrontation with Carmelita and the Gang enjoyed their stay in America, stealing souvenirs, soon heading back to the hideout to prepare for their next mission.

  +
Arriving in Russia, the gang was attacked almost immediately by a powerful death ray. With the latest modifications of the Cooper Van, Sly was able to fight off the robo-falcons that swarmed around them while they dodged the death ray. Inside the base, Sly found that Carmelita had been captured and placed in a chamber. Despite Bentley's warnings that this was a possible trap set up by Clockwerk, Sly will not willing to stand by and let Carmelita face immortal doom.
Vicious Voodoo
Episode 3: Vicious Voodoo

After reviewing what was known on the mystic, Sly arrived in Haiti and sneaked into Mz. Ruby's compound, and got past her guards. Through supernatural dealings and a bit of running around, Sly was able to infiltrate Mz. Ruby's lair. Along the way, Bentley took note of a hovercraft Mz. Ruby used in her operation and how it was nothing that he ever seen before. Ignoring the advanced machinery, Sly pushed on and confronted the third member of the Fiendish Five.

  +

Both exchanged banter of creeping the other out, Ruby's rather sarcastically. After a brief encounter, Mz. Ruby teleported and challenged Sly to reach her by playing a game of, as Sly called it, "Voodoo Simon Says". Succeeding and defeating her, Mz. Ruby admitted Sly's skill to beat her at her own game, but explained that it wouldn't help him defeat the Panda King in China. Confident, Sly believed that he, like the previous three Fiendish Five, would go down. Finding her pages within her lair, Sly collected the third section of the Thievius Raccoonus. The pages elaborated on the first known famous Cooper, Slytunkhamen Cooper II who developed the invisibility technique in Egypt to steal from corrupt Pharaohs. Carmelita's arrival cued Sly's exit and the gang enjoyed the beaches of Haiti, working on their tans in preparation of their next caper.

  +
After sneaking across the heavily secured room, he arrived at the chamber, but the door closed behind him as soon as he stepped inside. Upon seeing Sly, Carmelita began to think that he was the culprit behind her capture, but Sly assured her that it was a rescue. Shortly after, Sly lost consciousness from the toxic fumes that filled the room, while Clockwerk appeared on the computer screens and chided Sly's sentimentality. Bentley sprang into action and hacked Clockwerk's security, turning off the gas just before Sly's brain could be "turned to cheese".
Fire in the Sky
Episode 4: Fire in the Sky

Sly examined the profile of the Panda King before passing through his stronghold undetected and fighting through his personal guards. During the night, Sly found yet another hovercraft like Mz. Ruby's and Bentley identified it as identical in design to the one found in Haiti. Sly kept it in mind and continued on, finding Inspector Fox to have caught up to him. Sly begged her to open her eyes and realize that she was within a criminal's center of operation. Carmelita refused to listen, certain Sly was simply trying to confuse her and obstinately believing Sly was planning something illegal. She gave chase and Sly managed to escape her once again, continuing onward and finally breaching the Panda King's home atop a statue at the center of his headquarters. The Panda King took note of Sly's cane and recognized him as a member of the Cooper Clan and asked if he sought revenge to take back his section of the Thievius Raccoonus. Sly remarked it was his original intention but now intended to end the Panda King's villainous operation, burying villages in avalanches of snow with his fireworks. The Panda King said his methods were not an issue, as both of them were thieves.

  +
Once Sly regained consciousness, Carmelita apologized to him for her accusations and promised to make it up to him if he could free her. After escaping Clockwerk's clutches, the two briefly reasoned with each other how, at the moment, they were both on the same side and Clockwerk was the enemy, to which Carmelita agreed. Therefore, she called a temporary truce with Sly in order to work together to bring down Clockwerk. However, she reminded Sly that when this was all over, she would go after him as well, after a ten-second head start. Carmelita offered Sly the use of her jetpack, which he had to acquire at the top of the death ray. Upon reaching the top of the tower, which had subsequently sunken into the lava, he equipped the jetpack shortly before Clockwerk revealed himself. The owl explained how he kept himself alive through a steady diet of jealousy and hate for the Cooper line, awaiting the day he would finally eclipse their thieving reputation.
Sly protested and denied Panda King's claim, rebutting his claim and that while Sly was a thief, the Panda King was simply a "frustrated firework artist turned homicidal pyromaniac." Enraged at Sly's disrespect, the Panda King attacked Sly with his new firework technique, Flame-Fu. Despite his ability to conjure flames from his hands, the Panda King was defeated, commenting on Sly's mastery with his father's cane. Bentley quickly radioed him after the battle, alerting Sly that he studied the hovercraft's composition and discovered that its location comes only from the Krack-Karov Volcano in Russia. Bentley deduced the fifth member of the Fiendish Five was located there and instructed Sly to leave as soon as possible. Before leaving, Sly retrieved the stolen section of the Thievius Raccoonus from the Panda King which included designs and schematics conceived by Otto Van Cooper.

  +

Sly avoided a frustrated Carmelita once again while coming down the mountain and all three Cooper Gang members relaxed in Hong Kong, with Sly stealing food from the local market, before heading back to the hideout. Using Otto Van Cooper's designs, Murray was able to integrate several weapon systems into the van ready for their next move.

  +
Those words confirmed Sly's suspicions as to the identity of the figure in the pictures within the Thievius Raccoonus. Before engaging in battle with the owl, Sly inquired about his reasoning for sparing his life when he attacked his home. Clockwerk simply stated that he wanted to show the world that without the Thievius Raccoonus, the Cooper line was nothing, something that Sly disagreed with, stating that the Thievius Raccoonus was a book created by master thieves and not a book that "creates" master thieves. The two then engaged in battle, and with Carmelita's help, Sly was able to shoot down the owl. After Clockwerk dropped down into the lava and began his auto-reconstruct sequence, Sly seized control of the jetpack and made his way to the Clockwerk's head, by foot, to destroy it. As Sly made continuous blows at Clockwerk's head, the owl said his final words: "Cooper, you will never be rid of me! Clockwerk is superior!"

On their trip to Russia, Sly examined the pages of Thievius Raccoonus that he had retrieved. He noted that the book had little information on the final member of the Fiendish Five. While gazing at the multiple pictures detailed in the book, Sly noticed a consistent pattern in some of them: a shadowy owl-like figure seemingly pursuing them in the background. Sly checked police images again in his file and recognized them as matching the owl silhouette of the Fiendish Five's mysterious leader, Clockwerk. Sly wondered whether or not this disturbing revelation was a coincidence. However, they soon arrived at Clockwerk's lair. Greeted by the owl's powerful Death Ray, Sly and company combated Clockwerk's mechanical minions and deadly weapons to reach the inside of his volcanic lair. Once inside, Sly, Bentley, and Murray drove deeper inside until they gained access to the Death Ray's control tower. Sly leaped in and attempted to sabotage the weapon but found the immediate defenses dangerous.

However, Sly found Carmelita captured and trapped on the other side and, despite Bentley's protests of it being a trap, proceeded past the defenses to rescue her. Once inside the chamber, the doors closed and Sly found his cane to be ineffective in breaking the glass. Carmelita, unaware of the situation, assumed Sly was responsible for her capture and Sly quickly denied it. Immediately, the chamber filtered in poisonous gas and the shadowy image of Clockwerk appeared upon the viewing screens. The owl laughed, mocking Sly's actions as paralleling his clan's sentimental nature and their downfall. After disconnecting his view of Sly's demise, Clockwerk's victim was saved by his cohort, Bentley, who hacked into his database and shut off the gas chamber. Sly regained consciousness and Carmelita apologized for blaming him and said she would make it up to him. He freed her and both ran to the lair's exterior. Carmelita questioned why Sly freed her after hunting him down for years and Sly replied that she wasn't his enemy, Clockwerk was. In agreement, Carmelita suggested an alliance which Sly joyfully accepted but she warned him it was temporary until Clockwerk was taken down and that she would go after  afterwards. Grateful for his rescue, she promised she would grant him a ten second head start.

With the entire Fiendish Five defeated, Sly expressed his pride in managing to recover his family heirloom. He acknowledged the help he had from Bentley and Murray, who stuck with him through it all, even though it was not easy for them. Commenting on both of their abilities, he realized how lucky he was to have friends like them, and could never ask for better ones.
One of Clockwerk's mechanical owls swooped down and swiped Sly's cane, flying across the lava before being shot down by Inspector Fox. The cane, high atop Clockwerk's facility, was out of reach and Sly desperately begged that they retrieve it. Carmelita told Sly her jetpack was also high atop Clockwerk's Death Ray before she was captured and said he should also try taking it after grabbing the cane. She provided covering fire as he traversed the facility's exterior, shooting down Clockwerk's minions until he finally reached his cane and recovered it. Sly immediately entered the vicinity of the Death Ray, the inside of the volcano. Bentley alerted Sly that Carmelita's support fire had destroyed the weapon's magnatronic support field and that the weapon was sinking into the lava quickly. Rushing to grab the jetpack across the top of the huge laser weapon, Sly climbed the crumbling device as it slowly fell into the molten sea beneath it.

  +
With Clockwerk out of the picture, Sly and Carmelita were back to playing cops and robbers. She confronted Sly along a catwalk, ready to bust him. However, she remained true to her word and gave him the ten-second head start, which he used to stare her down. At the last moment, Sly kissed her. Dazed by the sudden romantic advance, Carmelita failed to realize that Sly used the distraction to handcuff her to the railing, which enraged her. Sly was certain, however, she would be chasing after him again very soon. Shortly after Clockwerk's defeat, Sly restored the Thievius Raccoonus to its original state (if all the pages are found) and felt that he had truly earned the title of "master thief".
After equipping Carmelita's jetpack, the object of Sly's vendetta finally revealed himself. Clockwerk took flight and confronted the Cooper, objecting to Sly's escape from his gas chamber and destruction of his Death Ray. He was surprised, grudgingly admitting how Sly's family always found a way to beat him, confirming Sly's suspicions of the identity to the shadowy figure in the Thievius Raccoonus. Questioning him, Clockwerk vaguely answered the Cooper and told him that he was immortal and beyond aging, his anger, jealousy, and hatred creating the perfect formula to preserve his life within its cybernetic shell. His reasoning was also mysterious, describing his desire to simply surpass the Cooper Clan's thieving reputation. Clockwerk engaged him, his armor unaffected by Inspector Fox's weaponry. However, Carmelita noticed her Shock Pistol created vulnerabilities for the cyborg and told Sly to take advantage of her shots. He did, and Clockwerk's body was ravaged by the sudden onslaught. Unable to fly and plummeting into the lava, Bentley noted to Sly his belief that Clockwerk was dead.

  +
The Adventures of Sly Cooper, Issue 1 / To Catch a Thief
However, Clockwerk's body had emergency engines and he arose again from the lava, determined to kill Sly there. Sly contemplated Clockwerk's words and actions, certain he knew that night he stole the Thievius Raccoonus that his father had a child and questioned why the owl let him live. Clockwerk answered directly, believing the world would see that without the Cooper Clan's book, they were nothing compared to him. Sly interjected, claiming that Clockwerk was fooled by the concept and that the Cooper's created the Thievius Raccoonus, not the other way around. Angered, Clockwerk ceased their conversation, seeking to end the charade and finish him off. After a second battle, the cyborg owl was defeated again and plummeted into the lava, Sly leaping down from his jetpack to finish him off. Bentley warned Sly of Clockwerk's auto repair circuitry and the raccoon sprinted across the destroyed wreckage of Clockwerk and his Death Ray before leaping upon the owl's back and bashing his head in.

Before finally shutting down, Clockwerk warned Sly that he could never escape him, and finally the last member of the Fiendish Five was defeated. Snatching from his claw the last pages of the Thievius Raccoonus, Sly succeeded in recovering the entire book and avenged his family by taking down the Fiendish Five. Shortly after Bentley and Murray arrived to the volcano's base, Carmelita confronted Sly to arrest him. As she promised, she gave him a ten second head start. Smiling, Sly stood there as the countdown occurred, waiting until the last second before slipping Carmelita a kiss. While dazed and blushing by his sudden show of affection, Sly handcuffed her to the ruins of Clockwerk's facility in those few moments and escaped with the Cooper Gang, leaving an enraged Carmelita behind although he felt she would escape and be chasing after him very soon.

Restoring the Thievius Raccoonus
Shorty after Clockwerk's defeat, Sly restored the Thievius Raccoonus back to its original state with the help of Bentley and Murray. According to him the other ancestors simply inherited the book while he got the chance to earn it. Sly has finally earned the reputation and title of "Master Thief".

Arriving in the attic, it is revealed to Carmelita and D'Oinkeau that Dimitri is an art forger and that Sly Cooper was not apprehended. Sly and the gang went to Monaco to steal The Venus De Whalo from Dimitri Lousteau, an infamous forger, and Madame D'Oinkeau, his then fiancé, during a party. When he breaks into Dimitri's mansion he finds some of Dimitri's goons forging fine art. After swiftly defeating the forgers, guards come behind Sly while he's talking to Bentley. Sly knocks them out and takes their uniforms. He, Bentley and Murray dress up as these guards and inform Inspector Carmelita Fox, (who was an invited guest), that Sly has been seen upstairs. Dimitri tries to stop Carmelita from venturing upstairs but isn't able to slow her down. Realizing that he can't stop her he runs off. When Carmelita and D'Oinkeau make it upstairs, they find the forgers tied up. Carmelita finds the forged paintings and realizes that Dimitri is a forger, much to D'Oinkeau's dismay. Realizing that this was a decoy Carmelita runs back downstairs to find The Venus De Whalo gone and Sly's signature calling card with a beret on it in its place. Meanwhile, Sly and his gang have just put The Venus De Whalo into the back of the Cooper van. When Bentley tells Sly that they were 12 minutes and 37 seconds over schedule, and that the next boat doesn't leave for another 45 minutes, Sly runs off to distract Carmelita.

On his way to where he knew Carmelita would be, Sly reminisced about the gang's first job, the "Cookie-Steelin' Plan". Carmelita traced the Cooper van's tracks outside of the mansion, wondering out loud what kind of an asset Sly would be if he worked for the police. The two of them tell the story of how they met, with minor differences. At the end of it, while Carmelita doesn't admit to Sly's goodwill, she states that she is no longer the rookie of that time.
During this time he recalls his very first heist as a child, stealing the orphanage's cookie jar from Ms. Puffin.

As they were telling the story, Carmelita had been inching closer to where her shock pistol lay, and Sly gives her permission to go for it, pointing out that he has nowhere to go on the bridge, as he can't swim. She dove for the gun and said that Sly will be in handcuffs along with Dimitri. However, while she was looking away, Sly jumped off the bridge. Afraid that he would drown, Carmelita rushes to the edge and looks over, where it is revealed that he had landed on the last ferry out of Monaco with his gang. Carmelita yelled out that she'll get him if it was the last thing she did, and Sly thinks to himself that his father would have liked her.
He finds Inspector Fox inspecting the area and knocks her shock pistol out of her hand. They both recall the first time they met, at the Paris Opera house. Their accounts of the night vary. After they finish talking about their first encounter, Sly tells Carmelita to grab her shock pistol, because they are on a bridge and Sly has nowhere to run. She goes to grab her gun claiming she'll arrest Sly then Dimitri, but when she goes to point the gun at him he's gone. Thinking that Sly's jumped into the water she looks over the bridge. She sees Sly, Bentley, Murray and the Cooper Van on the boat that they were waiting to board. 45 minutes had passed while they were reminiscing. Carmelita curses Sly and promises that she will arrest him. They all wave at her and escape with The Venus De Whalo.

Two years after the fight with Clockwerk, Sly and the gang discovered that the Clockwerk parts were saved from the Krack-Karov Volcano and were being held in a museum in Cairo. Sly, with the help of Bentley and Murray, attempted to steal the parts and destroy them. Upon Sly's arrival at the room where the Clockwerk Parts should be held, the parts were already gone, and both Carmelita and new officer Constable Neyla came out of hiding to confront Sly. Neyla hinted to Sly that the missing Clockwerk Parts were likely stolen by a dangerous criminal coalition known as the Klaww Gang and Sly took the opportunity to escape while Neyla and Carmelita bickered. He quickly escaped along with Bentley and Murray to track down the Clockwerk Parts.

The gang quickly found the location of the Clockwerk Tail Feathers in Paris, where the Klaww Gang member, Dimitri used it to forge money. Overnight, the gang destroyed Dimitri's operation and left France with the Clockwerk Tail Feathers in hand as Carmelita and Neyla arrested the forger. As a deserving reward, Sly and the gang spent a week in Monaco. A few weeks later, Sly and the gang tracked down the Clockwerk Wings to India, where they were held by another Klaww Gang Member, Rajan.

Two years after Clockwerk's defeat, Sly and the gang discovered that the untarnished parts of the owl had been salvaged from the Krakarov Volcano and were being held in the Museum of Natural History in Cairo, Egypt, where they were to be restored in the "Clockwerk Restoration Project"l With the help of Bentley and Murray, Sly broke into the museum in order to steal the parts so they could be properly destroyed once and for all. As Sly entered the Clockwerk exhibit, he discovered that the parts were already gone. Carmelita and her new partner Constable Neyla, hiding in a pair of sarcophagi, revealed themselves. While Carmelita was sure that Sly was thief responsible, as he had the motive, and crooks "always return to the scene of the crime." However, Neyla was not so sure Sly was the culprit, as she let slip that the guard casualties and method of entry pointed to it being a Klaww Gang job. As Carmelita reprimanded Neyla, stating that she only allowed her to be apart of this case as a favor to the Contessa, Sly and his gang escaped the museum.

Sly crashed the party at Rajan's palace in disguise, and danced with Carmelita to distract the crowd during their operation. With the success of the dances on the part of Sly and the operation, the gang carried away the Clockwerk Wings and Rajan retreated into hiding. After a small break in Bollywood, the gang learned that Rajan also had the Clockwerk Heart. During the operation, Neyla willingly helped Sly collect half of the Clockwerk Heart and agreed to a date with him after the job was over. Unfortunately for Sly, Neyla double crossed him and knocked him out, leaving Murray to defend him against Rajan. Shortly after the fight, Neyla showed the Contessa, a member of Interpol, her capture of the Cooper Gang and Rajan and also framed Carmelita for conspiring with the gang. The Contessa arrested them all, as Bentley witnessed events at a distance.

It did not take long for the gang to discover the location of the Clockwerk tail feathers. They tracked them down in Paris, where Dimitri, the forger previously met in Monaco, was using them (due to their indestructible alloy) to constantly print counterfeit money. Over the course of the night with help from Neyla, who let it be known that she purposely tipped Sly off to the Klaww Gang, the gang destroyed Dimitri's operation and left France with the tail feathers. They spent some time in Monaco before heading off to the next location: a palace in India owned by another Klaww Gang member, Rajan.

With Sly and Murray in a rehabilitation clinic in Prague, Bentley was Sly's only hope. Bentley discovered Sly was held in 'the hole' isolation area of the facility, left in the dark day after day for his mind to rot. The heroic turtle also discovered that the Contessa was secretly a member of the Klaww Gang who brainwashed criminals into revealing where they had hidden their loot. Bentley took out the security systems to free Sly and the two of them set everything up to free Murray. Realizing the gang had escaped, the Contessa quickly escaped on her blimp, and Sly and his friends celebrated their breakout.

Sly crashed a party being held at Rajan's palace while in disguise, dancing with Carmelita (who was undercover along with Neyla and the Contessa) to distract the crowd while Murray cut the Clockwerk wings free from a large statue. After Carmelita discovered that the one she was dancing with was Sly, she broke cover and started making arrests left and right. Rajan retreated to his spice temple while the gang headed to Bollywood. During their small vacation, they learned that Rajan also had the Clockwerk heart, which he was using as a pump to water his spice plants. Eventually, the gang got their hands on one half of the heart, but were betrayed by Neyla while attempting to collect the other half. Sly, Murray and Carmelita, who Neyla claimed was allied with the Cooper gang, were all arrested and imprisoned in the Contessa's Prague-based rehabilitation clinic while Bentley escaped.
Sly was overjoyed to have the gang back together after the brief diaspora, and after their escape, the Cooper Gang discovered that the Contessa had hold of the Clockwerk Eyes and also held Carmelita captive for hypnosis. As Sly and the Cooper Gang attempted to free Carmelita and make off with the eyes, they discovered Neyla had set up shop with an army of mercenaries bankrolled by Interpol to take down the Contessa. The gang freed Carmelita, and Sly chased the Contessa across the rooftops. They fought, and Sly emerged victorious with the Clockwerk Eyes. The gang escaped along with Carmelita (much to Sly's 'eternal' delight). Sly and Carmelita went their separate ways, with Carmelita now a fugitive against Interpol following the incident in India.

Sly was thrown into "the hole": a chamber that was used to break criminals' minds with days of isolation. Bentley, working on his own, eventually broke Sly out. He also discovered that the Contessa was a secret member of the Klaww Gang that used her powers of hypnosis to reveal the location of criminals' fortunes. The two set to work on freeing Murray, who was being held in the prison area of the clinic. After freeing him, the Contessa escaped on her blimp to her castle estate, and the gang celebrated their breakout. After a relatively long break, the gang followed the Contessa to her castle, where she was being attacked by Neyla, who had now betrayed her, and her army of mercenaries. Carmelita was being held in the Contessa's "re-education tower" where she was being bombarded by the hypnotic effects of the Clockwerk eyes. Against Bentley's advice, Sly freed Carmelita while collecting the Clockwerk eyes, before defeating the Contessa. Now a fugitive from the law, Carmelita accepted Sly's help in escaping from Neyla.

A week or two later, the gang hunted down the chief of transport in the Klaww Gang, Jean Bison. They found out he was in possession of the Clockwerk Stomach and Lungs and promptly performed three train robberies and made off with them. Sly realized at the end of this operation that he sorely needed to help Carmelita redeem herself to Interpol, and knew that he'd need to do it some way other than turning himself in. After discovering that Jean Bison had escaped to a Canadian Lumber Camp, the gang then decided enter the Lumberjack Games that Bison had organized. Sly and his gang raided the facility and cheated using underhanded methods to obtain the Clockwerk Talons.

  +
Now fully committed to taking down the spice empire, the gang headed to Canada where Jean Bison, the Klaww Gang's chief of transport, was located. They discovered that he was in possession of the Clockwerk stomach and both lungs, which he was using to run his three "Iron Horses": trains that carried spice all across North America. After three successful train heists, Sly decided that he needed to help clear Carmelita's name without turning himself in. Following the robbery of his trains' power sources, Bison headed to his lumber camp where he was holding a series of challenges called the "Lumberjack Games", with the Clockwerk talons as the prize. Realizing that Bison had the judges so scared as to always give him perfect 10s in score, the gang took out all of the judges and replaced them. Giving him all zeroes, Bison caught on to the trick and captured the gang. They defeated him inside the prison where they were held, before escaping. Realizing that Bison had taken all of their Clockwerk parts and sold them to Arpeggio, the gang rushed to the northern lights battery before Arpeggio's blimp could pick it up.
However, fate once more reared its ugly head, and Sly was captured, being held in the underbelly of the sawmill along with his friends. When Bentley was entered into a brutal struggle with Bison, Sly used logging machinery to defeat the Klaww Gang lackey. Meanwhile, Jean Bison's guards raided their safe house and sold all the Clockwerk Parts to the chief machinist and leader of the Klaww Gang, Arpeggio. The Gang defeated Bison and stowed away on a battery that they'd emptied out earlier and dealt with their losses. Sly spent the time agitated and restless, awaiting action—any action.

  +
As soon as the battery was hooked into the blimp, Sly headed to the smaller balloon that was holding all of the Clockwerk parts. It was there that he learned that Neyla and Arpeggio were conspiring the entire time to collect the robotic bird for themselves. In an impassioned attempt to stop the construction, Sly accidentally locked the parts into place. Neyla and Arpeggio confronted him, and Arpeggio revealed his master plan of using the northern lights (which were stored in the northern lights battery) to hypnotize everyone below the blimp into a fit of rage. As rage is what kept Clockwerk alive for centuries, Arpeggio was planning to use this hate to remain immortal inside of Clockwerk for eternity. However, before he could enter the Clockwerk frame, Neyla attacked him and entered for herself, becoming "Clock-La". She then killed Arpeggio and escaped the blimp, preparing to absorb the hatred that would come as soon as the blimp passed over Paris. Sly, along with Bentley and Murray, toiled to dismantle critical parts of the blimp before finally sending out a signal to Carmelita, who arrived shortly after in a police helicopter.
Anatomy for Disaster
Episode 8: Anatomy for Disaster

On their way to Arpeggio's blimp, Sly realized they had little time to stop the under-going reconstruction of Clockwerk. As soon as they arrived on the blimp, Sly rushed to a balloon where the Clockwerk Parts were being held. It was there that he learned that Neyla and Arpeggio were conspiring the entire time to collect the robotic bird for themselves. In an impassioned attempt to stop the construction, Sly indirectly locked the Clockwerk Parts into place. Neyla and Arpeggio confronted him, and Arpeggio revealed his master plan of using the Northern Lights to hypnotize everyone below the blimp into a fit of rage (the thing that kept Clockwerk alive) so that he could remain immortal inside Clockwerk forever.

  +
Carmelita agreed to join forces with Sly in order to defeat Clock-La. Jumping into her helicopter, Sly took control of its gun and attacked her. Before she could be defeated, however, she located and captured Bentley and Murray within the battery, destroying the blimp in the process. Sly glided to Clock-La and attacked her head, forcing her to the ground. As she crashed to the ground, Bentley recalled that Neyla mentioned a "Hate Chip". While trying to remove it from the frame, Bentley was crushed by the beak and paralyzed from the waist down. With the Hate Chip removed, Clockwerk's body exploded. Despite this, none of the individual pieces were damaged. Carmelita, having just arrived and being angry at not being able to attack Neyla herself, stomped on the Hate Chip, which caused all of the parts to disintegrate on the spot.
Neyla suddenly betrayed Arpeggio and entered the Clockwerk Frame herself to form Clock-La and killed Arpeggio with a single crushing blow. She broke out of the blimp, ready to absorb the power of hate to live forever. Sly and his gang labored to dismantle parts of the blimp to stop the evil conglomeration, finally putting out a signal to Carmelita Fox, who arrived in a police helicopter.

  +
Sly and his family were finally free from the menace of Clockwerk. In spite of this, Carmelita needed to uphold the law and put the gang, Bentley included, under arrest. Realizing that his gang was in no shape for a quick getaway, Sly promised to surrender with no trouble if Carmelita let Murray walk with Bentley in his arms. She agreed, and was soon after given a reinstatement and promotion by her boss, Inspector James Barkley. While on the short helicopter ride across town, Carmelita quickly loosened up and the two shared stories about their interests. Some time later, she realized that the "short ride" had already taken two hours. While she checked on the pilot (who was gone, thanks to Murray), Sly picked his handcuffs and escaped with his paraglider. As he flew off, Carmelita swore that she'd get him and quietly remarked that she'd see him again soon.
Carmelita agreed to join up with Sly to defeat Clock-La, and Sly willingly joined the fight as her tail gunner. With expert firing on the part of Sly, Sly and Carmelita defeated Clock-La in a dogfight over the skies of Paris, but the owl flew from the action and captured Murray and Bentley in her claws. Sly paraglided after them in an epic chase as dangerous components of the blimp were scattered into the air. Sly eventually reached Clock-La and defeated her again. As the frame crashed to the ground, the gang realized that she was still alive. Bentley remembered hearing Clock-La mention a Hate Chip, and as Bentley attempted to take the Hate Chip out of the Clockwerk frame, the beak closed on him, resulting in paralysis from the waist down. Clock-La was blown apart.

The Adventures of Sly Cooper, Issue 2
Sly, however, noted that the parts were still undamaged, as if nothing could actually destroy them. Luckily Carmelita, who was angry at not having a whack at Neyla herself, smashed the Hate Chip and rendered Clockwerk's parts useless thus killing Neyla in the process. The four survivors watched as the parts faded to dust.

In spite of the emotion of the moment, Sly and his somewhat fractured gang were promptly placed under arrest by Carmelita. In a selfless act, Sly willingly agreed to take the fall for the entire affair and persuaded Carmelita to let Bentley and Murray leave without quarrel. Carmelita agreed and was given a promotion by her superior, Inspector Barkley.

Sly was taken on board a helicopter for transport into Interpol custody. Although initially silent, the two of them got to talking and recounted over past adventures and even told each other about their favorite things, prompting Sly to relate the experience to a first date. However, as Carmelita was about to share some champagne she'd been saving for Sly's arrest, she realized that the short journey had taken over two hours. Whilst Carmelita went to the cockpit to check on the lack of progress, Sly realized that Bentley and Murray left with a little parting gift by rigging the chopper to fly in circles. Sly promptly parachuted out of the chopper to freedom. Carmelita swore that she'd get him as he flew off, and remarked that she'd see him again soon.

After receiving a messenger pigeon, Sly headed to Heathrow Penitentiary to meet Jim McSweeney. He sneaked into the prison and found McSweeney's cell and, after passing a test to prove his identity, learned the location of map to Kaine Island where the Cooper Vault was located.
The Adventures of Sly Cooper issue 2
Sly Cooper visited Jim McSweeney in prison in an attempt to get him to divulge the location of the map to Kaine Island. After passing a test, McSweeney showed Sly the location, a museum in Italy. After a failed attempt to get the map, Sly and Murray realized that they needed Bentley's brains. Sly was able to bust Bentley out, but Murray stayed behind to fight off the armed guards that showed up mid-bust.

  +
After trying and failing to get the map from a museum in Italy, Sly and Murray realized that they would need Bentley, who was currently in the hospital after the accident at the end of their last adventure. While they broke him out, Carmelita took over the investigation of the failed museum heist. She retrieved the painting that Sly had touched and took it to her apartment. Sly, planning for this, broke into her apartment and stole the map, which had been hidden underneath the canvas.
Carmelita, taking over the case of the failed museum heist, unknowingly took the map as evidence when she bagged a canvas that Sly had touched. Sly sneaked into her office while she was sleeping and took the map from the canvas. After escaping, he met back up with Bentley who had made alterations to a wheelchair to suit his needs. As the two talked, Murray came into the Parisian safe house, clothes tattered, and told the two that he was leaving the gang for their betterment.

After escaping from the scene, Sly met back up with Bentley, who had made modifications to a wheelchair to suit his needs. As the two talked about the upcoming heist, Murray entered the safe house and told them that he was leaving the gang so that nothing like Bentley's accident would ever happen again. Despite having just lost one third of their team, Sly and Bentley headed out for Kaine Island. When they arrived however, they saw that the island had been transformed into a fortress by a mandrill scientist named Dr. M. With security "as tight as Fort Knox," Sly realized that it would take a team of specialists to be able to sneak onto the island and reach the Cooper Vault.

Replacing Clockwerk, Sly's main enemy was now Dr. M, a mandrill scientist who was currently attempting to claim the Cooper family vault for himself on a far off island. During the initial stages of the operation, Sly was captured by one of Dr. M's monsters and was being crushed to death. As Sly felt his last moments were imminent, he had a flashback recounting how he and the gang gained four more allies in the lead-up to the heist on the island.

  +
They set out for Venice directly to re-recruit Murray, who had been seen in the area. With the help of Dimitri (who had been imprisoned there), Sly found Murray, who promised to rejoin the gang after making the "black water [run] pure" as part of his Aboriginal dreamtime training. The "black water" was the pollution of the canals around the city, caused by the crime lord Don Octavio in an attempt to lure in an "audience" for his opera. Sly and Bentley, with Murray's help, foiled the plans of the Don and, with his Guru's request fulfilled, Murray rejoined the gang.
An Opera of Fear
Episode 1: An Opera of Fear

Sly and Bentley first re-recruited Murray, who left them after blaming himself for Bentley's paralysis and went on a spirit journey to find inner peace with himself. Sly felt that Murray was too much of an asset and friend, and set out to Venice with Bentley to find him. Murray agreed to re-join only if "the black water ran pure." This "black water" was the pollution of the water around the city with tar, caused by crime lord Don Octavio. Sly and Bentley foiled Octavio's plan and had him put away in the process. With his Guru's request fulfilled, Murray re-joined the gang.

  +
Despite this, Murray felt bad for never returning to the Guru, so to find closure the gang headed to Australia. However, miners in the area had since destroyed the surrounding land while searching for opals, and had inadvertently released the Mask of Dark Earth, an ancient cursed mask that the Guru was tasked with keeping dormant. Though the mask did escape its confines, the gang destroyed it (with Carmelita's mercenaries' help) and the Guru agreed to join the gang, becoming the first new member since the gang's creation.
Rumble Down Under
Episode 2: Rumble Down Under

Sly next went after Murray's teacher, The Guru, who the gang acquired the services of after saving his home from excavation workers and a cursed mask in Australia.

  +
As Bentley's RC skills were not sufficient for the heist, the gang went looking for a specialist. They found one in Penelope, a mouse from Holland and the crush of Bentley, but before she would join, the gang needed to prove their worth by beating her boss, the Black Baron, in aerial combat during the ACES competition. It is revealed, after his defeat by Sly, that the Black Baron was Penelope in disguise. She joined the gang and took a liking to Sly, despite him being completely oblivious to her crush.
Flight of Fancy
Episode 3: Flight of Fancy

Their new RC expert, Penelope, who later becomes Bentley's love interest, was recruited to the gang after they defeated her in an aerial racing competition called ACES in Holland.

  +
Despite Sly's reservations, Bentley assured him that the next member to be recruited must be one with supreme demolition skills. It was decided that the gang would head to China to recruit the Panda King. He was found in a deep meditative trance, which he was snapped out of thanks to Sly and the Guru. He had been meditating after his daughter, Jing King, had been kidnapped by General Tsao, who was forcing her into marriage with him. Along with the arrival and help of Carmelita, Tsao was arrested and Jing was saved. The Panda King and Sly both put aside their differences and the team gained another member.
A Cold Alliance
Episode 4: A Cold Alliance

They also managed to employ the former Fiendish Five member, the Panda King, on their side as a demolitions expert after rescuing his daughter from a forced marriage by the ruthless General Tsao high in the Kunlun Mountains.

  +
Finally, after a call for a favor from Dimitri (which Sly owed him after he gave Sly the location of the Black Baron's flight roster back in Holland), the gang headed to Blood Bath Bay to help him retrieve his grandfather's diving gear. However while retrieving the gear, Penelope was kidnapped by pirate captain LeFwee. The rescue attempt, despite its hitches, ended with LeFwee falling into shark-infested waters and Penelope rescuing Bentley. She then realized that she was attracted to Bentley for his smarts, despite Sly's athletic ability.
Dead Men Tell No Tales
Episode 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Finally, they recruited former Klaww Gang member Dimitri as an underwater operations expert after recovering his grandfather's old diving equipment from pirate Captain LeFwee off the coast of Blood Bath Bay.

  +
The Cooper Gang sailed their newly acquired pirate ship to Kaine Island for the heist. Sly made it up to the vault's door, but Dr. M interfered. In a fight with Dr. M's mutant primate Sly both lost his cane and was severely injured. Carmelita arrived just in time and battled the mutant, saving Sly.
Honor Among Thieves
Episode 6: Honor Among Thieves

As the flashback ended, Sly mentally begged for the pain to stop, but was saved from death by the rest of the gang and Carmelita. Sly recovered from his injuries after copious bed rest, and the group managed to gain access to the Cooper vault.

As the vault was meant for Coopers only, Sly went inside alone while Murray and Bentley guarded the entrance. Sly overcame many challenges based on the Cooper family's thieving abilities, with each test built by one of Sly's ancestors. Sly even learned a new skill to slide along lasers in a chamber built by his late father.

Sly recovered from his injuries and, after battling Dr. M's mutant Whale-Fly, entered the vault with Bentley and Murray. As the vault was meant for Coopers only, Sly continued alone while Bentley and Murray guarded the entrance. Sly overcame many challenges based on the Cooper family's thieving abilities, with each test built by one of Sly's ancestors. Sly even learned a new skill, the laser slide, in a chamber built by his late father.

At the heart of the vault, Sly was confronted by the evil Dr. M, who had followed him inside. It was revealed that Dr. M was actually a member of the old Cooper Gang with Sly's Father and Jim McSweeney and the mandrill considered himself to be a tool to Sly's father at best. This sparked something inside Dr. M that made him think that all Coopers were the same. Sly objected, vehemently maintaining that he was not his father. The ensuing battle led to the vault's collapse, and Carmelita arrived to arrest both Sly and Dr. M. The doctor fired a laser blast at Fox, but Sly jumped in front of it and took the blast himself. Carmelita defeated Dr. M and went to help Sly. As Sly came around, she discovered that he had (fake) amnesia, and had no memory of who he was or what his occupation was. When he asked her, she lied and claimed he was her partner, "Constable Cooper". Believing her words, Sly and Carmelita escaped the vault, leaving Dr. M to his fate as it collapsed on him.

He considered himself to be a tool to Conner at best and claimed that all Coopers must be the same. Sly objected, vehemently maintaining that he was not his father or any of his ancestors. The ensuing battle led to the vault's collapse, and Carmelita arrived to arrest both Sly and Dr. M. The doctor fired a laser blast at Carmelita, but Sly jumped in front of it and took the blast himself. Stating that, "No one hurts my criminal!" Carmelita finished off Dr. M and jumped up to help Sly. As Sly came around, she discovered that he had amnesia, and had no memory of who he was. When he asked her, Carmelita lied and claimed he was her partner in law, "Constable Cooper." Believing her words, Sly and Carmelita escaped the vault, leaving Dr. M to his fate as it collapsed on him.

The gang looked for Sly but to no avail, however before going off with Carmelita he managed to leave them with some of the Cooper treasure, his signature pouch, and his cane. The Cooper Gang then went their separate ways, with Murray becoming a racing driver, Bentley hoping to build a time machine with Penelope, and Sly beginning a new chapter of his life with Carmelita.

In Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, Sly and the gang have returned to save the Cooper Family's history, literally. The game begins, as always, with Sly narrates some events that have occurred since the previous game.

I Smell a Rat
Paris Prologue

When the game itself begins, Sly, Bentley, and Murray are pulling the van up in an alley across the street from a museum in Paris from which they have to steal a samurai dagger to use the time machine. The museum they're stealing from is the same one that Sly himself was about to steal from right before Bentley and Murray came back into the picture, and is also owned by the mysterious Frenchman known as The Collector. They pull off a fantastic heist, Sly going after the dagger itself, while Murray and Bentley handle the security measures, guards and the laser grid system around the dagger. As soon as Sly grabs the dagger, Carmelita bursts into the room with extreme anger. Sly then climbs back up through the sunlight onto the roof and, before he leaves, says "I'll call you." When Sly gets back to the van and meets up with Bentley and Murray, they hop in and frantically drive around the museum courtyard, smashing through numerous shipping crates scattered around the building as well as fences, also bumping into several of The Collector's men and their trucks. Then Murray drives up a ramp and over the fence and gets ready to make the jump while Sly regards that they're trapped. Murray then "punches it" on the van and they go back in time to Feudal Japan.

  +
After an undisclosed amount of time, Bentley contacts Sly and tells him that the Thievius Raccoonus was losing its contents, and that the only explanation is that somebody is messing with the past. After Murray is contacted, Bentley shows the two an invention that he and Penelope, who had gone missing some time before, had been working on: a time machine. However, due to the short time frame that they had to prevent further damage to the book, the design had been modified to fit into the Cooper Van and required an item from the desired time period to work. This prompted the heist of a nearby Parisian museum, which Sly was already eager to steal from, as his kleptomaniacal urges were coming to the surface. The gang broke into the museum and stole a Japanese dagger. As Sly was replacing the dagger with his signature calling card, Carmelita burst into the room, angry at Sly's switch back to crime. Dimitri was left in charge of the Thievius Raccoonus, as well as being in charge of determining where next to go in time.
Turning Japanese
Episode 1: Turning Japanese

Once they get to Japan, after their hideout is set up, Sly goes out to take recon photos for Bentley, taking photos of some elite-style guards, the dragon gates, the prison that Rioichi Cooper is locked up in, Rioichi's sushi shop, and the geisha house. After the photo of the geisha house is taken, El Jefe comes out and starts roaming around while Sly takes a recon photo. Next, Sly steals pieces of a suit of Samurai Armor to get into the prison. After Sly gets the armor, he goes up to the prison gate, but the guard stops him, remarks that he's a bit short to be a commander, and demands Sly's name. Sly comes up with an alias, "Major Muggshot," the guard says he's never heard of him. Sly then says that he's been an officer since the guard was "a squealing piglet" and threatens to report him to the general, jokingly saying that the general loves pork chops. The guard then, out of fear, says he just didn't recognize Sly and lets him in. Sly then sneaks through the prison, and when he gets to Rioichi, asking if he's okay. Rioichi, not knowing who the man is, remarks that all of the guards make very poor jokes. Sly then takes off the armor and reveals himself to Rioichi who refers to him as a fellow ninja. Sly then makes his way to Rioichi, avoiding the guards, using the armor to protect himself from fire traps, and finally, pickpocketing a key from a guard to open a gate to a bridge that leads to Rioichi's cage. Upon walking onto the bridge, he steps on a large button, which makes the bridge collapse and activates some more dragon fire traps. He spire jumps and leaps from hooks onto platforms where he has to destroy the traps by putting on the samurai armor and deflecting the fireballs shot by the traps. After he gets to the cage, Rioichi remarks that only a "true Cooper" could get to the cage, and Sly admits that he's Rioichi's relative from the future. Then Sly looses his grip, but Rioichi quickly saves him by grabbing Sly's cane and catches Sly with the hook, pulls him up, and they both escape by climbing up the chain that Rioichi's cage was hanging from.

  +
The gang headed to feudal Japan and found that a dictator-for-hire, the tiger El Jefe, had set up and arrested Sly's ninja ancestor, Rioichi Cooper, for a crime that he hadn't committed. Sly entered the prison where he was being held using a disguise and rescued Rioichi. Back at the hideout, Rioichi filled the gang in on the workings of El Jefe. The gang then began working to free the village from the dictator's grasp. As they broke into El Jefe's stronghold, the tiger stole Rioichi's cane. Sly chased him up the fortress and battled El Jefe atop it. Before he could retrieve Rioichi's cane after beating El Jefe, he was ambushed by several rat troopers that were seen previously during the museum heist. They took the cane and were pulled up into a large blimp where a shadowy figure stood watching Sly. One of the rats carelessly dropped a sheriff's badge, which Sly took for use in the time machine.
Rioichi then fills the gang in on the workings of El Jefe when he arrived in town and turning the place into a high security military base. They then work to free the town of El Jefe's grasp.

  +
The gang used the badge, which took them to the Wild West, the home of "Tennessee Kid" Cooper, who had also been thrown in prison by another time traveler, "Sheriff" Toothpick. To meet up with and rescue Tennessee, Sly got himself thrown in prison by vandalizing posters of Toothpick. In prison, Sly rescued Tennessee, who then told the gang about what Toothpick had been doing. Much to the entire gang's surprise, Carmelita was in the past with them, taken hostage by Toothpick. Tennessee, using his Rail Walk ability, rescued her, but in his absence, the rest of the gang was captured by Toothpick. Tennessee and Carmelita eventually rescued them, and Sly tried to explain himself to her, but she was still hurt by his betrayal. It turns out she had been sent back in time by Cyrille Le Paradox, the owner of the Parisian museum and the shady figure from before, while she was investigating his black market art dealings. In an attempt to stop Toothpick's gold train, the gang was sent over the edge of a cliff in the van. Thinking quickly, Bentley threw Murray's Aboriginal necklace into the scanner, which sent the gang to Australia, 10,000 B.C..
First order of business was to retake Rioichi's sushi restaurant, where his knives served as door keys in the place. Rioichi and Murray go to steal Madame Geisha 's outfit for Murray to disguise himself to lure away El Jefe and steal his map. Bentley then tails El Jefe with his RC car to get information on his fortress.

  +
Trapped in Gungathal Valley due to the crash sending parts of the time machine around the valley, the gang begins a search for the pieces. Carmelita, however, leaves the gang due to her anger at Sly. While performing recon on the area, Sly discovers that a black bear, Grizz, had been sent back to the ice age as well. Much to Bentley's surprise, Sly also finds a prehistoric raccoon who turns out to be his ancestor. Calling him "Bob," the gang promise to help him remove Grizz from the area, who had been stealing Bob's tribes only food source, pterodactyl eggs, for use as paint. Carmelita returns in time to help raid Grizz's base. After Murray defeats him, the gang uses Grizz's crown to travel to the medieval ages. Carmelita agrees to stick it out, as the Cooper Gang is the only way she'll be able to get back to the present.
The gang then breaks into El Jefe's stronghold, only for the tiger to steal Rioichi's cane. Sly climbs up after El Jefe up his statue fortress where a battle ensues. Sly emerged victorious, but before he could reclaim Rioichi's cane, he gets ambushed by the gas-masked rat guards who swipe the cane and retreat back into a huge time machine blimp, where Sly gets a shadowy glimpse of The Collector. One of the rat guards accidentally drops a sheriff's badge in his haste, which Sly takes to use for the time machine.

  +
Arriving in fourteenth century England, it is soon revealed that something is amiss. Robotic wolves are patrolling the streets and Sly's medieval ancestor, Sir Galleth, has been forced to work as a jester in the circus. Sly frees Galleth and tells the gang about the Black Knight, the tyrant who had arrived and taken over the kingdom with his robotic weaponry. He also had stolen Galleth's cane, which Sly quickly retrieves for him. As Galleth goes to a nearby cave to take on the Moat Monster, Carmelita follows him, which Sly notices, as he claims she never watched his back before. Carmelita responds, saying that she has, when she's tried to catch him. It is discovered by Bentley that the Black Knight is actually Penelope in disguise, which sends him into a depression. She had stolen Bentley's time machine plans and built the blimp that Le Paradox was using. Sly vowed that Penelope will pay for her betrayal of not just the gang, but Bentley. Taking on the giant Black Knight mech, Sly is able to defeat it, but is trapped by the debris. As Penelope comes closer, Bentley appears atop the castle in a mech suit of his own, built from the parts of the defeated Moat Monster. Bentley defeats Penelope and overcomes his demons, apologizing to Sly for not being there for him. Sly tells him to not worry about it and the gang heads to Arabia using a coin Carmelita had pocketed as evidence in the museum.
Go West, Young Raccoon
Episode 2: Go West, Young Raccoon

Sly and the gang head for the Wild West, where they learn that Sly's ancestor, Tennessee Kid Cooper had been jailed before he was able to carry out his legendary bank heist due to the interference of new sheriff, Toothpick . Sly was forced to get himself thrown in jail in order to bust Tennessee out. Once freed, they get the whole story from Tennessee about Toothpick.

  +
In Arabia, Sly finds a senior Salim al-Kupar. Salim was in a slump due to three of his friends and members of his gang, the Forty Thieves, being kidnapped. The gang set out to rescue the three. It is discovered that Le Paradox's plan is to forge documents in the past, which Salim's gang members had been forced to do, to give himself a royal lineage in the present. Finding where Le Paradox's blimp was docked, the gang headed there. Sly battled with the hypnotic Miss Decibel, Le Paradox's girlfriend (or so she thought), before the blimp took off with Carmelita as a hostage.
To Sly's surprise, he found Carmelita was there in the Old West, taken hostage. Once saved by Tennessee, Sly , Bentley, and Murray get caged by Toothpick. After being rescued by Carmelita and Tennessee, Sly tries to explain himself to her, who wouldn't hear any of it as she was still sore about him returning to being a thief again. Sadly, the Gang didn't manage to free the van, which made them stuck in the Wild West forever.

  +
Back in the present, Sly sneaks aboard the blimp and finds Carmelita tied up in the darkness. Trying to release her, they are both trapped with a glass container. Le Paradox reveals that this container will be sent bouncing throughout time forever using his "time tunnel." As the two are trapped, Bentley and Murray travel back in time and collect all of the ancestors to help with releasing Sly and Carmelita. Sly fights Le Paradox as the time tunnel tears the blimp apart. Defeating the skunk, Sly is tricked by him and has his paraglider stolen. Without a way off the blimp, Sly turns back and heads inside.
Bentley informs Sly, Carmelita, and Murray that they had to take part in some games to win the keys to the train. Sly had to complete an obstacle course race while rolling on his prison ball to win his key.

  +
Some time later, Sly awakens to the hot sun. It is revealed that Sly is now trapped in Ancient Egypt.
Sly and Tennessee raid the train, where Toothpick managed to steal Tennessee's cane and Murray got his van back. Sly goes up to fight against Toothpick, but again, the cane was taken away by the rat guards. Sly was forced to make his escape off the train as it was headed for an incomplete bridge. Unfortunately, the van's breaks were out and they soon plummeted off the cliff. Fast thinking from Bentley, he used Murray's fossil necklace to time travel out of there, right into the Ice Ages.

The gang gets trapped in the Ice ages where core components have scattered about the area. Carmelita continues to act cold towards Sly and storms off by herself despite the dangers, leaving the raccoon saddened. In the opening cutscene, Sly and Bentley were trying to break Murray out of prison. The job was unsuccessful, but just as Sly was about to get caught both he and Bentley were suddenly sucked into a wormhole. The wormhole transported them to a mysterious planet where they met Jak, Daxter, Ratchet, and Clank.
Everyone then goes to raid The Grizz's base where everything seems to go according to plan, until Murray accidentally falls and winds up going another route than intended, leaving Sly to take over his role to stop the resetting of the base's security system. In turn, Murray takes over Sly's initial role to face The Grizz and takes him down himself. Sly congratulates him, saying that he's the hero this time around. They then cop The Grizz's crown to use to travel to the Middle Ages. Sly was also happy Carmelita had cooled down somewhat as she had to accept that she has to stick with them if she ever wants to return back to the present.

  +
It was revealed that two creatures named Gleeber and Lunk transported the heroes there for the purpose of testing their skills in a competition called the "Inter-Universal Hero Games". It is later found out that Gleeber and Lunk have enslaved an alien race known as the Whibbles in order to construct a teleportation device. This device would allow the alien duo to take the heroes' places back home. With the help of the Whibbles, the heroes defeat Gleeber and Lunk. Then, they use the teleportation device for themselves to return home. Sly and Bentley reappear in the prison, and Sly began recounting the adventure to Murray.
Of Mice and Mechs
Episode 4: Of Mice and Mechs

Sly and crew arrive in England, where the streets are being patrolled by cybernetic wolf knights. Learning about Sir Galleth Cooper's fall in occupation as a circus jester, Sly goes to the circus to help him. Before that, he was told by Bentley to find some quality wood, metal, and leather for him to fashion an outfit for Sly to use. Armed with the archer's outfit, Sly breaks into the big top where Galleth was held and freed him.

Sly appeared as a playable character in the Sony brawler PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. In Sly's story, several pages of the Thievius Raccoonus had been stolen. Sly set out with Bentley and Murray to find the thief and retrieve the pages. After several battles, Sly encountered Nathan Drake, who was in possession of the stolen pages. Sly taunted Drake about his carelessness in handling the pages, and Drake challenged him to a fight to take them back. After defeating Drake, and afterwards Polygon Man, Sly and his partners returned home only to find out that the pages had been rewritten in an ancient Mesopotamian language. The Gang immediately left for Istanbul to meet with someone who Bentley claimed could translate the pages.

During battles, Sly had three "super moves" that he used against opponents:
Sly is then tasked with getting shots of the Black Knight, who continues to remain a mystery as he doesn't meet any of Interpol's criminals. Once getting shots, Sly managed to steal back Galleth's cane.

Sly makes a cameo appearance in the Ratchet & Clank film during the scene where Clank is trying to find out what species Ratchet is.
Sly, Carmelita, and Galleth were forced to come up with a plan of attack as Bentley was in no condition to plan anything at the moment. After breaking into the castle, Galleth rushes forth to fight the Black Knight, only to get tossed aside and his cane taken away. Penelope then drops the gate, causing Carmelita to shove Sly out of the way before he could get impaled by it, but now he's trapped with Penelope's giant Black Knight Mech. Sly managed to literally disarm the mech using only arrows, but then gets trapped under the wreckage. Before Penelope can finish him off, he is saved by Bentley, who was now wearing a modified mech suit. After Bentley defeats Penelope, he apologizes to Sly for not being there for him, but he tells him not to worry about it as they're friends. They all leave the Middle Ages for Ancient Arabia, thanks to a coin Carmelita pocketed back in the museum for evidence.

40 Thieves
Episode 5: 40 Thieves

The gang arrive in Ancient Arabia, where they discover an aged Salim Al Kupar, who was in a slump just before he was about to retire being a thief. They find out his three fellow thief partners were captured by Ms. Decibel, so they work to free them.

Sly, Bentley, and the Cooper Van make cameo appearances in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, as part of the RYNO 8; whenever the RYNO 8 is fired, there is a random chance that Sly, Bentley, or the Cooper Van will appear from the dimension rift created by the weapon.
Sly goes to tail Ms. Decibel who was meeting Le Paradox, gathering info about the mysterious door in the lamp shop. To Carmelita's displeasure, and Sly's happiness, Carmelita was instructed to dress up as a belly-dancer in order to distract the guards at the door while Sly and the rest try to force it open. What they find was a huge docking station for Le Paradox's time machine blimp. Sly is then forced into a battle with the cacophonic Ms Decibel.

Physical appearance
  +
Being a raccoon, Sly has gray fur with black stripes on his tail and a natural mask, as well as brown eyes. His nose has a blue tinge to it, but it is only seen in artwork and seems to have been dropped from his design in Thieves in Time. His ensemble consists of a black mask, blue elbow-sleeved shirt with a yellow collar, blue boots, blue gloves with yellow cuffs, and a blue newsboy cap. Around his waist is a belt with the buckle shaped in the form of the Cooper symbol. He initially wore a red backpack, which contained goods and calling cards, but traded it out for a leg pouch in Sly 2: Band of Thieves. He wore both a leg pouch, for goods, and a brown backpack with the Sanzaru Games logo on it, for paragliders, in Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time.

  +
Personality
Deja Vu All Over Again!
  +
Sly is a cunning, devious, quick-witted, charming, suave, nimble-witted, agile, brave, and good-natured gentleman thief. He uses his wit, courage, charm and skills to pull off jobs, and often crack jokes and sarcastic comments at the expense of others and as a very cynical laid-back raccoon. Sly is also very cool, calm, laid-back, level-headed, rational, collected and manages to keep a calm head in stressful and chaotic situations. Through all of his hardships, he remains loyal and dedicated to any he calls his friend, particularly Bentley and Murray, and Inspector Carmelita Fox, despite her attempts to put him behind bars.
Paris Prologue

Sly sneaks aboard Le Paradox's blimp where he finds Carmelita tied in the darkness. He goes to free her, but she screams it's a trap. Soon, the both of them get encased in a glass capsule where Le Paradox plans to throw them into a wormhole where they would forever bounce through time. The two get rescued in time and broke out as the blimp began to collapse on itself due to the wormhole going out of control. Sly tells Bentley and Murray to take Carmelita and get off the blimp as quickly as possible while he goes to finish things with Le Paradox. Carmelita immediately began to feel regretful of how she's treated Sly up til now.

  +
In the beginning of the series, Sly was very cocky, arrogant and driven by his own personal goals. On occasion, he would scold Bentley for slowing missions. He often disregarded Bentley's advice and warnings, and sometimes spoke rudely of Murray. At the end of the first game, Sly openly admitted that he wouldn't have made it that far without them both, leading to his respectful resolution in the future games.
Sly then faces off against Le Paradox. During the fight, Sly calls him out about how his entire plan was downright stupid as it was all just to feed his over-inflated ego when he already had it good as a billionaire art collector. Sly easily defeats Le Paradox, but failed to get off the blimp thanks to Le Paradox's theft of Sly's Paraglider. He had been missing for weeks, but Bentley, Murray and Carmelita continue to search for him, believing that he's still alive out there.

  +
By Sly 2, Sly had developed more of an appreciation for his team. He is much more respectful of his team than he was in the first game, having great confidence in all their skills, while retaining his inherently cocky nature. He fully came to appreciate them after being captured by Contessa.
It was then revealed that Sly is indeed alive, but now finds himself in ancient Egypt...

  +
By Sly 3, Sly became an entirely new thief, though with the sarcasm, witty banter, quips and debonair charm still intact. He can't imagine his life without his team. He now takes the feelings of Bentley and Murray seriously, always on the lookout for when they were bothered or sad.

In PlayStation Move Heroes, Sly and Bentley were trying to free Murray from a prison cell. As Sly plants bombs at the cell door and makes way, the wire he was connected to broke by a laser. Just as he was about to fall into the laser grid, his world was paused. Sly thought it was Bentley who helped, and a worm hole comes by taking both Sly and Bentley and leaving Murray in his cell. they dropped down on a barren planet along with Ratchet, Clank, Jak, and Daxter. Sly and Bentley start hiding from them, and they get off on the wrong start. Bentley and Clank from the Ratchet and Clank series explain how they landed here, and to top it all off, a mysterious alien duo named Gleeber and Lunk invites them to the first annual "Inter-Universal Hero Games". They say that they "hit pause" on their home worlds. Everyone agrees to the challenge and Lunk gives them the equipment. However, after returning back to Paris and ending up right where they left off, Murray managed to bust himself out so Sly told him about what just happened while Bentley successfully fixes a communication with Clank.

  +
By Thieves in Time, Sly became more of a frequent joker, and his focus would often deviate away from the task at hand whenever he had a quip up his sleeve. However, he remained the same in that he always focused on defeating the foe in the end.
PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale
In the Sony brawler PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, Sly is a playable character. Sly's special Super Moves are as follows:

*Level 1: Murray comes in and helps Sly by running at and falling on enemies.

*Level 2: Sly uses Carmelita's jetpack to fly around the stage and drop bombs on enemies.

Bentley is one of Sly's lifelong childhood friends back at the Happy Campers Orphanage. Sly would make jokes to Bentley's seriousness when concerning plans of pulling off heists, but still appreciates his friend's concern for him. During Honor Among Thieves, there is a noticeable strain in Sly's relationship with Bentley. Jealousy Bentley had tried not to acknowledge started to swell. Nevertheless, Sly stuck by him, comforting him to show how valuable Bentley was to him. Sly even admits that he probably wouldn't have gotten as far as he did without Bentley's help. He also took it rather personally when Penelope betrayed them, but more importantly betrayed Bentley's heart.

Like Bentley, Murray's also one of Sly's lifelong childhood friends from the Happy Campers Orphanage. Sly had one time labeled him as "part-time driver, full-time burden", but is no longer the case in Sly 2 onward. Being the two frontline fighters of the trio, Sly and Murray would go into battle as a dynamic duo knowing that they'd watch each other's backs. Murray never allows his hulking frame to discourage him. He even jokes about it. Sly appreciates Murray for his strength, and his even stronger heart.

Sly's relationship with Carmelita is quite complicated. The latter is obsessed with trying to arrest Sly, but he would always have the time to make flirty chit-chat with her - even while on the run from her. He even goes so far as to say that his being a master thief is a lot more fun when Carmelita is chasing him around. Sly would always risk getting himself arrested just for a chance to flirt with Carmelita, much to her annoyance. Despite their working on opposite sides of the law, they do hold respect towards the other, and maybe more. Both would go so far as to rescue the other if in danger. Between Sly 3 and Thieves in Time, Sly manages to pursue a relationship with Carmelita, then falls back into the usual business by Thieves in Time. Sly continues to try and get back into Carmelita's good graces, who thought of him as a liar as well as a thief. They soon reconcile near game's end.

Sly's relationship with Carmelita is quite complicated. Carmelita is determined (possibly to the point of obsession) with apprehending Sly, but he always makes the time to flirt with her, even while she chases him with the goal of putting him behind bars. He has even said that being a master thief is a lot more fun when Carmelita is chasing him. Despite working on opposite sides of the law, they do hold respect towards each other, both rescuing the other several times. After defeating Dr. M, Sly managed to pursue a relationship with Carmelita by lying to her about having amnesia and giving up thievery. However he falls back into the usual business by the time Bentley contacts him with information about a new adventure. Perturbed by his deception, Carmelita resumes her normal duty of pursuing Sly. After a taxing journey through time, Carmelita accepts that she cannot change Sly and gains a newfound respect for him, realizing that they are on the same side. While on Le Paradox's blimp, Carmelita apologizes for her past mistreatment of Sly, which he returns before he disappears. For a third time, Carmelita resumes her hunt for Sly, but this time to confirm that he is alive.

Sly thought Dimitri to be a weird and annoying-talking thug in the beginning of Sly 2, but then had to get his help in Sly 3 by helping Dimitri escape jail. Sly thought Dimitri was a strange counterfeiting thug when he first met him, but after putting him behind bars, Sly broke Dimitri out of jail as a favor. They pretty much hit it off, though Sly still considers him strange for his manner of speech and style, though never admits it to him. He trusts Dimitri enough to have him retrieve his lost cane on Kaine Island, as well as look after the Thievius Raccoonus while the gang was traveling through time, showing that he doubts Dimitri would ever betray their friendship. Dimitri holds Sly in similar regard, and was saddened by his disappearance.

He even had the thought of taking her on a date to Bollywood. Sly thought that their cooperation was the best thing to happen, until she betrayed him and the gang, as well as him getting arrested alongside Carmelita, whom Neyla framed. While he, unsurprisingly, took the betrayal personally, he still managed to keep a little bit of his snarkiness intact whenever he crossed paths with Neyla. That being said, his behavior towards Neyla became completely serious and personal when he found out she was working for Arpeggio, and especially after she merged with Clockwerk to become Clock-La. Before directly fighting Clock-La, Sly even called her out as a "low-down backstabbing coward" with sincerity and a bit of anger in his voice.

After hearing Murray's stories about his training with the Guru and his telepathic skills, Sly was instantly interested in meeting him and adding him to the gang. Sly was quick to trust the Guru, as Murray had always spoken highly of him. After their operation in Australia was complete, Sly happily welcomed the Guru as the first official new member of the team. Their trust in each other only grows, as Sly calls on the Guru with help on multiple jobs in Holland, China, Blood Bath Bay, and Kaine Island. He particularly shows his immense trust in the Guru in China, when he allows the Guru to connect his mind to the Panda King's, as well as using his telepathy to help guide Sly to the hidden bamboo forest.

Like the rest of the Cooper Clan, Clockwerk hated Sly with a burning passion, which Sly reciprocated due to his role in his parents' death. Initially knowing little about the mysterious owl, Sly was shocked to learn that Clockwerk had antagonized and (presumably) killed his ancestors for generations. This is further shown by Clockwerk's ability to easily trap Sly using Carmelita as bait, a tactic he seemed to have learned from experience, as evidenced by his line "Empathy has always been the downfall of the Cooper Clan". Despite this, Sly remained unfazed by Clockwerk's assertions of superiority or his own supposed weakness, refuting Clockwerk's assumptions of his family's dependence on the Thievius Raccoonus by stating, "The Thievius Raccoonus doesn't create great thieves, it takes great thieves to create the Thievius Raccoonus." It's also possible that Sly is the only member of the Cooper Clan that Clockwerk has willingly spared, if only to prove a point. Similarly, Sly is possibly the only member of the Cooper Clan to triumph against Clockwerk to the extent of destroying his robotic body, with the aid of his friends and Carmelita. It's also apparent that Sly feared Clockwerk after learning about him, a fact which is made obvious in the second game, often referring to Clockwerk like a sort of boogeyman and describing him as a "monster," clearly horrified of the traits that made Clockwerk who he was. This fear is further emphasized by Sly's determination to reclaim Clockwerk's parts and stop his reconstruction at almost any cost.

Crime? I haven't stolen anything... yet.
― Sly Cooper to Carmelita Fox[src]

Sly Cooper, the thief, is the titular main protagonist of the Sly Cooper series. He is a male raccoon with gray fur and brown eyes who is best friends with Bentley and Murray, who are also members of his gang. He has a complicated romantic relationship with Inspector Carmelita Fox after faking amnesia.[2] He is currently stuck in Ancient Egypt.[1]

Sly first appeared in Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, at the age of 18.[3] He was 20 in Sly 2: Band of Thieves and 21 years old in Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves. As Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time takes place right after the previous entry,[4] he is either still that age or 22 years old in that game. He was born to his mother and father, Conner Cooper, in 1984.[note 1]

He was voiced by Kevin Miller in all of his video game appearances.

History

Background

Early childhood

Born into a family of master thieves that went back generations, I was next in line to continue the Cooper name. But fate had different plans. I was robbed of my childhood when a ruthless gang attacked our home.
― Sly[src]

Sly was born into the long lineage of master thieves known as the Coopers under the tutelage of his father Conner Cooper. Between the jobs that his father's gang would pull off, Sly would spend time with Jim McSweeney, a member of the gang and Conner's friend. At the age of three, Sly was taken by his father to a museum on the Ligurian coast in Italy where they met up with McSweeney, who then took the map to the Cooper Vault—an island-wide safe that holds the riches of the entire Cooper Clan—and hid it in the museum.[5][6]

The Secret Police File 1

As Sly grew up, he learned about his family's history as master thieves. At the age of eight, he was to follow in their footsteps and inherit their legacy, a book called the Thievius Raccoonus.[7] However, tragedy struck when, on the night Sly was to inherit the book, a mysterious gang of criminals known as the Fiendish Five infiltrated the Cooper home. Try as he might, Conner failed to defend himself, his wife and his son from the gang, resulting in the death of both parents. The Fiendish Five ransacked the house in search of the Thievius Raccoonus as Sly watched helplessly from the closet. Once the villains found the book, they tore it into five parts before leaving.

Orphanage days

Broke and alone, I was dumped at town orphanage. There, I met two guys who would become my lifelong friends and trusted crew. Bentley, techno genius and strategist supreme, and Murray, part-time driver and full-time burden.
― Sly speaking about his friends and his experience at the orphanage[src]

Orphaned and with no money or a place to stay, Sly was placed in an orphanage, where he met his now lifelong friends Bentley and Murray. With their encouragement, Sly was determined to live up to his namesake as an accomplished thief.

Meeting Carmelita

Sly: Remember the night we met?
Carmelita: Oh, I remember it like it was yesterday, ringtail!
― Reminiscing about the first time they met[8]

Many years later, Sly (seemingly in his teenage years) arrived in Paris "looking for a little adventure" when he came across the Paris Opera House.[9] He claimed to be there to "just soak in the architecture".

He then proceeded to take the unconscious Pierre to above the opera's stage, where he then dropped him into the stage as Barkley was berating Carmelita again, as a sort of gift. Carmelita, assumed by Barkley to being the one who captured Pierre, was immediately promoted to the rank of "Inspector" as Sly watched everything unfold with a smile on his face.[10] And so began one very strange relationship.

Sometime later, Sly stole an item known as the Fire Stone of India, which put Carmelita after him again. He planned to give it to Carmelita as a token of his feelings for her.[11]

Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus

On this mission, I would either become a master thief like my ancestors before me, or fail and allow my family name to bite the dust.
― Sly Cooper[src]

The Secret Police File 4

The gang beginning their mission.

The Secret Police File 2

The gang escaping with the police file.

As the gang traveled around the world, they confronted each Fiendish Five member in their respective hideouts, defeating them one by one and collecting the pieces of the Thievius Raccoonus that they had taken. He used them to learn the techniques of his family.

A Daring Rescue gameplay 1

Sly approaching Carmelita's chamber in Clockwerk's lair.

A Strange Reunion gameplay 1

Sly and Clockwerk battling it out over lava.

Ten Seconds 1

Sly reflecting on his victory.

The Adventures of Sly Cooper, Issue 1 / To Catch a Thief

Just like dad always said-- "If you don't have a plan B, you don't have a plan."
― Sly to Bentley and Murray[12]

Sometime after restoring the Thievius Raccoonus, while trying to steal the Mona Lizard by Leo Rhino, Sly came across an invitation to a wedding in Monaco between Dimitri Lousteau, a nightclub owner, and Madame D'Oinkeau.[13] Unable to pass up the chance to steal D'Oinkeau's gift to Dimitri, the Venus de Whalo, the gang headed to Monaco.[14] With everyone downstairs, including Carmelita (who was invited by D'Oinkeau to protect all of Dimitri's art), Sly entered the manor through the attic via skylight.[15] He unwittingly discovered a forgery operation by Dimitri, but easily dispatched the guards as they try to attack him.[16][17] However, security closed in and seemingly captured him. Several security guards headed downstairs and alerted Carmelita to the situation, who jumped at the chance of arresting Sly Cooper.[18] Dimitri tried to keep Carmelita from heading upstairs, but was unable to stop her, and so left to "get some ice".

Arriving in the attic, it is revealed to Carmelita and D'Oinkeau that Dimitri is an art forger and that Sly Cooper was not apprehended. Realizing that the security guards were the Cooper Gang in disguise, Carmelita charged back downstairs but was too late to stop them from escaping with the Venus de Whalo in tow.[19][20] Outside, still in costume, the gang stuffed the statue into the van. Bentley revealed that, despite their success, they are twelve minutes over schedule and the next and the final ferry out of Monaco wouldn't leave for another 45 minutes. Sly took the opportunity to stall Carmelita while Bentley wondered if Sly purposely put them over schedule just so he could mess with her.[12]

On his way to where he knew Carmelita would be, Sly reminisced about the gang's first job, the "Cookie-Steelin' Plan".[21] Carmelita traced the Cooper van's tracks outside of the mansion, wondering out loud what kind of an asset Sly would be if he worked for the police. Sly dropped down from above and asked where the fun in that would be. Before she could shoot him, he knocked the shock pistol out of Carmelita's hand and pointed out that he only steals from criminals.[22] Carmelita retaliated with the fact that the criminals he steals from take from the common man, so by stealing from them Sly is perpetuating the cycle. They both think to themselves that the other is obsessed with them.[8] Sly begs to differ, and uses their first meeting as an example of his good intentions. The two of them tell the story of how they met, with minor differences.[9] At the end of it, while Carmelita doesn't admit to Sly's goodwill, she states that she is no longer the rookie of that time.

Carmelita yelled out that she'll get him if it was the last thing she did, and Sly thinks to himself that his father would have liked her.[23]

Sly 2: Band of Thieves

I don't know what's in my future, but I won't let it be a repeat of my past.
― Sly Cooper[24]

The Adventures of Sly Cooper, Issue 2

McSweeney: Well, ain't that the darndest thing... I shoulda' tried pigeons years ago... This supposed to mean something to me, pal?

Sly: Only if you're the same '"Big Jim McSweeney" that's been trying to gain the attention of Sly Cooper for the past couple of weeks. Are you?

― McSweeney and Sly talking

Sly meets McSweeney

Sly visiting McSweeney in prison

After receiving a messenger pigeon, Sly headed to Heathrow Penitentiary to meet Jim McSweeney. He sneaked into the prison and found McSweeney's cell and, after passing a test to prove his identity, learned the location of map to Kaine Island where the Cooper Vault was located.

Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves

Getting inside the place would take precision, creativity, and moreover, it would take an army of world-class thieves. Finding and bringing together that much talent won't be easy, but to get inside the Cooper Vault and collect my inheritance, I was willing to pay the price.
― Sly, after visiting Kaine Island for the first time[src]

They set out for Venice directly to re-recruit Murray, who had been seen in the area. With the help of Dimitri (who had been imprisoned there), Sly found Murray, who promised to rejoin the gang after making the "black water [run] pure" as part of his Aboriginal dreamtime training. The "black water" was the pollution of the canals around the city, caused by the crime lord Don Octavio in an attempt to lure in an "audience" for his opera. Sly and Bentley, with Murray's help, foiled the plans of the Don and, with his Guru's request fulfilled, Murray rejoined the gang.

At the heart of the vault, Sly was confronted by Dr. M, who had followed him inside. It was revealed that Dr. M was actually a member of the Original Cooper Gang with Conner Cooper and Jim McSweeney.

The gang looked for Sly to no avail. However, before going off with Carmelita, Sly managed to leave them with some of the Cooper treasure, his signature pouch and his cane. The Cooper Gang then went their separate ways, with Murray becoming a racing driver, Bentley hoping to build a time machine with Penelope and Sly beginning a new chapter of his life with Carmelita.

Some time later, Bentley is seen spying on Sly and Carmelita at a party with his binocucom. He catches a glimpse of Sly glancing back at him with a wink, revealing that he did not have amnesia. Bentley remarks on this with a closing remark: "That sneaky devil!"

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time

We were going to travel back in time, stop those responsible and fix the damage they've done.
― Sly Cooper[src]

Sly42

Some time later, Sly awakens to the hot sun. It is revealed that Sly is now trapped in Ancient Egypt.

PlayStation Move Heroes

Sly as he appears in PlayStation Move Heroes.

Sly appeared in PlayStation Move Heroes alongside characters from the Jak and Daxter and Ratchet & Clank series.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale

 • Level 1: Murray appeared on the stage and helped Sly by attacking opponents.
 • Level 2: Sly used Carmelita's jetpack to fly around the stage and drop bombs on opponents.
 • Level 3: Sly targeted opponents with his binocucom to have them destroyed by Bentley.

Characteristics

Physical appearance

Personality

By Sly 2, Sly had developed more of an appreciation for his team. He is much more respectful of his team than he was in the first game, having great confidence in all their skills, while retaining his inherently cocky nature. He fully came to appreciate them after being captured by Contessa.

By Sly 3, Sly became an entirely new thief, though with the sarcasm, witty banter, quips and debonair charm still intact. He can't imagine his life without his team. He now takes the feelings of Bentley and Murray seriously, always on the lookout for when they were bothered or sad.

By Thieves in Time, Sly became more of a frequent joker, and his focus would often deviate away from the task at hand whenever he had a quip up his sleeve. However, he remained the same in that he always focused on defeating the foe in the end.

Abilities

Sly's primary weapon in the series is his family's cane, which is a brown staff ending in a golden hook. Many of his ancestors also had weapons incorporating the trademark hook, and the cane has become an infamous symbol of the Cooper Gang. Sly is also very capable with his cane and is a powerful opponent in a fight, repeatedly being shown beating opponents much larger and better equipped than himself.

Years of training and natural ability passed down through the Cooper bloodline have given Sly vast agility, balance, and reflexes, allowing him to perform feats that few can equal. In addition, he has learned every ability detailed in the Thievius Raccoonus, including balancing on the tops of sharp points, rope and pole climbing, invisibility, swinging on hooks, and running on wires. His skills include parkour, gymnastics, pickpocketing, safecracking, mastery of disguise, time manipulation and others.

Criminal Record

Aside from the obvious thefts or prison escapes, Sly has also committed these felonies:

 • Impersonation
 • Trespassing/Breaking and Entering
 • Unlicensed Aircraft Flight
 • Property Damage
 • Vandalism

Relationships

Bentley

Ah well, you know the old saying: "If you can't count on a friend to bust you out of jail, what kind of friend are they?".
― Bentley after breaking Sly out of "the Hole".[src]

Bentley is one of Sly's lifelong friends. Bentley's serious demeanor often prompts Sly to joke around, especially while on the job, though he still appreciates his friend's concern for him. During Sly 3, Bentley's condition put a noticeable strain on his relationship with Sly. This strain stemmed when jealousy that Bentley had tried not to acknowledge began to surface. Nevertheless, Sly stuck by him, comforting him to show how valuable Bentley was to the team. Sly even admitted that he likely wouldn't have gotten as far as he did without Bentley's help. While Sly felt some anger due to Penelope's betrayal, he was more worried about how said betrayal would affect Bentley.

Murray

Think of it this way, Bentley. If it were you in that vault and Sly and I were out here, what would he do?
― Murray to Bentley about their bond with Sly[src]

Like Bentley, Murray is one of Sly's lifelong friends. At one point Sly had called him a "part-time driver, full-time burden," but he retracted that statement after the defeat of Clockwerk when Murray's entire persona shifted. Being the two frontline fighters of the team, Sly and Murray often go into battle as a dynamic duo with the knowledge that the other has their back. Despite being somewhat envious of Sly's abilities, Murray never allows his large frame to discourage him, often making jokes at his own expense. Sly appreciates Murray for his strong body and even stronger heart.

Carmelita Fox

I don't get it, Cooper. I've hunted you for years, tried to throw you behind bars. But when you get a chance to leave me in cage, you set me free. Why?
― Carmelita after Sly frees her from Clockwerk's death trap.[src]

Dimitri

Neyla

At first, Sly seemed to have a thing for Neyla since she worked differently than Carmelita, as in willing to work with him rather than against him.

The Guru

After hearing Murray's stories about his training with the Guru and his telepathic skills, Sly was instantly interested in meeting him and adding him to the gang. Sly was quick to trust the Guru, as Murray had always spoken highly of him. When they meet for the first time, Sly showed a lot of respect for the Guru, promising to return his moonstone and remove the miners from his land.

Penelope

If only Bentley hadn't been brainwashed by Cooper's "honorable thief" nonsense!
― Penelope revealing her true feelings about Sly and his "code" (and how they're "holding Bentley back").[src]

Penelope had a one-sided crush on Sly once joining up with the Cooper Gang, but was unrequited (to the point of being unaware) as he has feelings for Carmelita. He was glad to have her on board, and that Bentley had found himself a girlfriend, which he was happy for. That changed in Thieves in Time when she sold them out to Le Paradox. Sly was angry that Penelope betrayed their trust and friendship, but was angrier that her betrayal shattered Bentley's heart, even saying in one cutscene "this time, it was personal!"

Panda King

Like with the rest of the Fiendish Five, Sly held contempt for the Panda King for his involvement in the murder of his parents. In Sly 3, they were forced to put aside their differences when made to work together. Sly and the Panda King didn't want to work together, nor did they trust each other. Sly even suspected that the Panda King was as vicious as ever when they made it to him. But by the end of the episode, Sly acknowledged that the Panda King was a member of the gang, ultimately forgiving him for the death of his father.

Clockwerk

Sly Cooper. You have escaped my gas chamber and destroyed my death ray. Remarkable. You Coopers always find a way to beat me!
― Even Clockwerk cannot help but praise his greatest enemy.[src]
